Yet another thing that Nigerian celebrities and American celebrities have in common, name changes.
Whether they are acting or making music, celebrities spend a lot of time building their brand names in the industry. After years of working hard to create a name to be remembered, a name change would never cross the mind of many celebrities. However, there are always exceptions to the rule.
Here are five celebrities who changed their names halfway through their colourful careers.
5. Toyin Abraham
Nollywood actress, Toyin Abraham, was introduced to the world as Toyin Aimakhu. According to the actress, the name change was a result of a family decision. Conspiracy theorists, however, believe that Abraham’s scandals with her marriage and Seun Egbegbe inspired the name change.
4. JAY – Z
American rapper, JAY Z, made a technical edit to the way his name is spelt with the release of his most recent album, ‘4:44’. Jay, who is known for his attention to detail, confirmed that his name would now be spelt as ‘JAY-Z’, not ‘Jay Z’ nor ‘Jay -Z’.
3. Fathia Williams
Known formerly as Fathia Balogun, the Nollywood actress changed her surname to ‘Williams’ following her divorce from Nigeria actor, Saheed Balogun.
2. Snoop Lion
Upon releasing his Reggae album, Snoop Dogg decided to rename himself ‘Snoop Lion‘. The new stage name did not stick and so a year later, Snoop went back to being a Dogg.
