He's among three figures predicted to reach the mark first in hip hop, though.
On Monday, February 20, Diddy released a video titled ‘For Motivational Use Only’ in promotion of his Aqua Hydrate business venture.
Near the commercial’s end, he says, ‘A young boy from Harlem, I couldn’t even be a waiter. They didn’t want me to be a waiter, so you know what I did? I became a billionaire.’
The Internet took that as a huge win for Hip Hop as Diddy received much praise and news coverage.
According to a post from his Instagram account, however, he simply misspoke and isn’t a billionaire yet.
‘A lot of blogs took that as I had become Hip Hop’s first billionaire,’ said Diddy. ‘That is not the case. The race is still on. It’s up for grabs. Any of you hustlers out there come out and get it.’
Hey guys I appreciate the congratulations but it’s a little bit premature I still have a lot of work to do. At the end of the day it’s not about the money it’s about the impact that you have on the world! Money doesn’t make you rich but it sure does pay the bills! Love to all my entrepreneurs and fellow hustlers out there. Keep Grinding and taking care your family’s. And of course keep God first above anything!
According to reports, the culture’s first person to reach 10 figures could be any one of Diddy, Jay Z and Dr. Dre, who was rumoured to reach the status first after selling his Beats by Dre line with Jimmy Iovine for $3b.
With a reported net worth of around $750m, Diddy was also on the 2016 Forbes Hip Hop list at number one.
