Deddeh Howard’s Black Mirror photo series remakes modelling campaigns featuring Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and more.
A model is encouraging the fashion industry to take a good hard look at its racial bias, through a powerful photo series that holds a ‘Black Mirror’ up to famous campaigns.
Deddeh Howard collaborated with her photographer boyfriend Raffael Dickreuter to recreate some of the world’s biggest modelling campaigns – including ones by Dolce & Gabbana and Victoria’s Secret – as ‘a call for more diversity’ in the industry, in a series called Black Mirror.
She captioned the picture on Instagram: ‘What do you mean you already have two to five black models that looks like me? Did you say the same thing to the 50 to 100 white models you already have?
‘If Kendall Jenner can do it, so can me or any other race! Here is my proof, so open your eyes and see that fashion is not black or white! Life is not black or white.
‘I’m just like her.’
According to her; ‘Agencies would often tell me, ‘We like your look but there’s a black girl already.’
It shouldn’t be limited to just one black girl; there can be more than one!’ She added: ‘It’s as if they [agencies] are ashamed to represent diversity. It’s very painful and it made me feel insecure and bad of myself.’
